Alpaca vs. Merino Wool

Alpaca and merino aren't interchangeable, even though they get lumped together constantly. The differences matter more than most people think — so here's an honest, sourced look at how they actually compare.

Softness and itch factor

Softness comes down to fiber diameter, measured in microns — the thinner the fiber, the less it pokes at skin. Research on wool comfort points to around 22 microns as the general "itch threshold." Fine merino sits comfortably under that line, which is why good merino doesn't feel scratchy. Alpaca fiber has naturally flatter scales, which several studies describe as making it feel noticeably smoother than merino at a similar thickness — closer to cashmere than to traditional wool.

Warmth

Both fibers are excellent insulators, just through slightly different mechanics. Merino traps warm air between its naturally crimped fibers. Alpaca fiber has a hollow core — it evolved that way in alpacas' native habitat, high in the Andes, where nights get brutally cold. That hollow structure traps air inside the fiber itself, which is why alpaca knitwear can feel surprisingly warm for how light it is.

Sensitive skin and allergies

This is where the two fibers really part ways. Merino naturally contains lanolin, the wool's own protective wax — most people tolerate it fine, but it's a known source of irritation for those with wool or lanolin sensitivities. Alpaca fiber doesn't contain lanolin at all, which is why it's commonly recommended as the more hypoallergenic option for sensitive skin.

Durability

Alpaca fibers have been found more resistant to breaking and pilling than merino under repeated stress, according to fiber-strength studies, including research out of Deakin University. In practical terms: an alpaca sweater tends to hold its shape and surface longer with regular wear.

Moisture and odor

Merino can hold roughly a third of its weight in water while still feeling dry to the touch, which is part of why it's popular in activewear. Alpaca absorbs less water, which means it dries faster and resists dampness, though it's less suited to heavy-sweat situations. Both fibers are naturally antimicrobial and resist picking up odor, so neither needs washing as often as synthetic fabrics.

Sustainability

Alpacas need less water than sheep and graze gently on soft, padded feet instead of hooves, which is easier on pasture land. One alpaca also tends to produce a strong yield of fiber relative to a sheep's fleece. Merino has its own sustainability profile, though processing it for a soft, itch-free finish (a process called superwashing) typically involves more chemical treatment than raw alpaca fiber does.

So which one wins?

Honestly — neither, universally. Merino is a fantastic performance fiber, especially for moisture-heavy activewear. But if you're after something warm, durable, gentle on sensitive skin, and produced with a lighter environmental footprint, alpaca is hard to beat.
